David J McCutchion and Suhrid Kumar Bhowmik
Patuas and Patua Art in BengalIdea for this book began in 1960s when David McCutchion, in the process of searching the temples in the districts of Bengal, came to Hooghly district. In 1966 he gave a lecture on the temples of the locality which showed his special interest in a particular terracotta plaque depicting the battle between Rama and Ravana. Some of those in the audience commented on the similarity of style of terracotta artists with the local scroll painters or patuas.
Suhrid Bhowmik showed a Ramayana pat to David, collected in his native village. Before long they started to meet regularly exchanging notes and to visit the scroll painters, despite long and arduous journeys along the narrow paths by the side of a canal or through the rice fields.
So this book is the result of an eager collaboration taken up some fifty years ago in which both of the scholars exchanged and shared a deep common interest. It contains an invaluable introduction on the subject by David McCutchion and four important articles on the subject along with a collection of songs and a metrical study of the same. The book is complete with three original ‘pat’ and 32 pages of colour and b/w reproductions.

Taking a journey through the historic past, the present study tracks how these spices from the coasts of Kerala made their way into distant Europe, and became a catalyst of some of the greatest adventures in human history. The discovery of maritime routes and new lands, while facilitating inter-continental and cross-cultural movements, also extended Europe’s commercial traffic to the remotest parts the world. The competition for spice trade triggered a fierce competition among the seafaring powers for the imperial control over the Indian Ocean routes and the spice-producing regions, eventually culminating in the colonization of India. ell researched and amply illustrated.

Education in search of a philosophyEducation’ has its roots in `e‘ and `ducere‘, which together mean: `to draw out’. School derives from `skhole‘ or leisure. But what is this human potential to be leisurely drawn out?
Marjorie Sykes points out that wise planning in education depends upon a clear understanding of the nature and goal of the human individual; and of the nature and values of the society of which he is a part.
The unexamined life is not worth living, said Socrates. The great gurus of ancient India stimulated independent inquiry. Gautama the Buddha warned his disciples against accepting “truths” on any external authority, even his own.
Our revolution must thus begin with the encouragement of independent inquiry, with what Tagore called “the education of the mind in self-reliance”. Open-mindedness and understanding are closely linked, for open-mindedness means the encouragement of independent reflection.
“Building from below” by means of a plurality of centres of local responsibility, … was the central theme of the socio-political philosophy of Gandhi, and is the basis of sarvodaya. Vinoba Bhave laid special stress on the need for education to be free from state control.
The purpose of the essays in the book Education in Search of a Philosophy is not to supply answers, but to indicate the nature of the questions involved.
Marjorie Sykes, the great educationist, came to India, while still young. She worked with Gandhi, and was deeply influenced by the thoughts of Tagore, Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave on education. She is also the author of ‘The Story of Nai Talim’ – outlining Gandhi’s vision of education.
