একটি কথা বারে-বারেই পেয়েছে লাঘবতা/ তাহারে লঘু করিব না তো আর—এই কবিবাক্য মেনে বৃদ্ধ বুদ্ধিজীবী শব্দটিকে বৈতরণী পার করিয়ে দেওয়াই হয়তো সংগত ছিল। কিন্তু মনে হল, খাঁটি বুদ্ধিজীবিত্ব বলেও একটা চিরজীবী ব্যাপার আছে, তার গুরুত্বকে নতুন করে কুর্নিশ করাটা আজকের এই ভাঙা স্বপ্নের দুনিয়ায় বিশেষ করে প্রয়োজন হয়ে পড়েছে। সেই তাগিদ থেকেই এই বই।
